The Formal

The brief was to create a formal garden with hedging and space for ball games. There was an existing terrace of York stone in good condition, which was kept. New York stone was used to edge the lawned area and to create a second terrace at the end of the garden. A large shed for storage was concealed behind a yew hedge, planted in a raised bed of rendered concrete.

A hardwood 'L' shaped bench was built onto the wall, which when lit from underneath appears to float. Box hedging was planted to soften the hard surfaces and add green sculpture. An adult sized swing was constructed between yew hedges which will be clipped into waves, and box hedging edges the planting beds adding formality to lush planting.
